For some, heaven will not be a perpetual dawn but rather an endless night - an eternity of the wild hours between dusk and sunrise. The Dark Carnival is a celebration of human beings given the rare space to play out their fantasy visions of themselves, the fleeting impressions of people dressed up for the glorious night caught in all their decadent glory. A unique collection of portraits personally selected by one of the UKs foremost portrait photographers covering alternative London's unique counter-cultural history from Punks, New Romantics, Goths, Disco Queens, Soul Boys, Fetish Worshippers, Rockers, Cyberpunks, Ravers, Clubbers and Party Animals. Derek Ridgers has been a feature in the clubs and on the streets of the capital for over 50 years - indulging in his obsession for documenting the people dressed up for the glorious night.Anyone who loves street style, youth subcultures, portrait photography and the curious human penchant for playing dressing up, will find this collection a darkly fascinating celebration of both night life and decadence.Packed with images exploring DIY fashion, self-expression and the fabulous strangeness of the human animal, ravers of all kinds will spend happy hours gazing at this book, at once a piece of social history and a visual poem, an expression of the fascinations of the author, a feast of luscious crepuscular imagery.

I WAS THERE

GIGS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD

The definitive guide to the past century's most talked about and mythologised live musical performances. This book recreates the sights, smells and sounds of the 20th century's most talked about and never beaten moments in the history of live music. The first fully-integrated, illustrative companion to these legendary events, I Was There reflects the scale and scope of the stadiums (immense to intimate), the vibe (chaotic to psychadelic) and the people (blissed out hippies, to punks and star-struck teens). First-hand accounts embellish the beautiful pictures of the gigs, in the form of articles and interviews with key witnesses, including The Pink Floyd as well as Petula Clark and Woody Woodmansey, the drummer for David Bowie, who describes the night when the "death" of Ziggy Stardust shook the rock world. Warhol's entourage, Gong and Rick Wakeman all contribute as well as Siouxsie Soux and countless photographers and fans. Ever wanted to know what it was really like to see the Beatles in one of their lunchtime spots in 1963 at the Cavern? Fancy stepping back to one of the first light shows by Pink Floyd in the mid-sixties?Want to relive the mud, sweat and beers of the Glastonbury festival? I Was There brings you these real live moments when important musical gatherings in 20th Century defined generations.

BACK IN THE DAYS

Back in the Days documents the emerging Hip Hop scene from 1980-1989—before it became what is today’s multi-million-dollar multinational industry. Back in the days, gangs would battle not with guns, but by breakdancing. Back in the days, the streets—not corporate planning—set the standards for style. Back in the days, Jamel Shabazz was on the scene, photographing everyday people hangin’ in Harlem, kickin’ it in Queens, and cold chillin’ in Brooklyn.

Street styling with an attitude not seen in fashion for another twenty years to come, Shabazz’s subjects strike poses that put supermodels to shame—showing off Kangol caps and Gazelle glasses, shell-top Adidas and suede Pumas with fat laces, shearling coats and leather jackets, gold rope chains, door-knocker earrings, name belts, boom boxes, and other designer finery. For anyone who wants to know what “keepin’ it real” means, Back in the Days is the book of your dreams.

GOTHIC & LOLITA

Gothic & Lolita charts the trend of Gothic street fashion that has swept Japan over the last decade. Influenced by Western fashion trends from the mid 1980s, young teenagers, predominately adolescent girls, congregate in the urban centres of Harajuku, Akihabara and a number of underground clubs in and around Tokyo, dressed head-to-toe in gothic costumes and late-Victorian dress. The psychological characteristics of the average Japanese Goth is one of introversion and exclusivity. The majority of girls in the scene are teenagers and most usually stop dressing and behaving this way by the age of eighteen. The origin of the movement was in Osaka in the mid 1990s when young teenagers adopted Gothic fashion in response to the clothes worn and promoted by Japanese Gothic rock bands. In the ten years since the trend began it has expanded to a number of cities including Tokyo and now boasts many thousands of devotees who dedicate their lives to creating ever more flamboyant and bizarre variations on the Gothic theme.

SLEEVEFACE – BE THE VINYL

This hilarious book immortalizes the craze that began while DJ Carl Morris was having a bit of fun in a Wales bar. Here is how Sleevefacing works: You find an old-school vinyl record sleeve with a nice head-shot of your musical icon (Elvis or David Bowie or Debbie Harry will do nicely), put the sleeve in front of your face, and strike a pose. Now get someone to snap your photo.

This growing Web phenomenon has its own Web site (sleeveface.com), Facebook presence, and thousands of inventive practitioners around the globe. Sleeveface compiles the cleverest of these images: the faux Morrisseys, wannabe Bob Dylans, and lookalike Madonnas whose posture and clothing is in perfect sync with their idols’ most classic record covers. With essays that celebrate the merits of vinyl in an age when music has gone digital, it will appeal to record collectors, music lovers across the generations, and anybody—which is to say everybody—who ever fancied him or herself a rock god.

DIE WILDEN ACHTZIGER

FOTOGRAFIEN AUS WET-BERLIN

'Excellent' Guardian 'Hugely enjoyable' Irish Times 'Dazzling' LRB 'Fascinating' New Statesman 'An absolute must-read' GQ.

PUNK LONDON 1977

Punk. London.1977. Most people blinked and missed it. Many spent a decade trying to catch up. Derek Ridgers stumbled across it by accident, where it was, in the beating filthy heart of the Roxy in middle of a derelict slum called Covent Garden. Stumbling through the moshpits trying to keep hold of a borrowed camera. 1977. Punk London brings you 152 pages of photography featuring the birth of the the most exciting cultural phenomenon in UK history. Currents and vibes, flows and backwash, trends and anti-trends splashing around in the cauldron of youth culture in the city of London, and the lost rebels haunting their suburban bedrooms - jumping the train uptown to get into the legendary Roxy. All converged, for one priceless moment, an outpouring of a truly original, DIY, anarchic, underground scene. Ridgers captured the first wave. Kids in the crowd, never before seen. The punks who made their own clothes because you couldn't buy punk clothes. The punks who got beaten up time and again for making themselves into targets. Rebellion before it got easy. You won't see these kids anywhere in the magazines. They weren't trying to get famous. 1977 will happen again. 1977 is happening somewhere, for someone, right now.

NEW YORK CLUB KIDS

The Club Kids comprised an artistic and fashion-conscious youth movement that crossed over into the public consciousness through appearances on daytime talk shows, magazine editorials, fashion campaigns, and music videos, planting the seeds for popular cultural trends such as reality television, self-branding, influencers, and the gender revolution. Known for their outrageous looks, legendary parties, and sometimes-illicit antics, The Club Kids were the hallmarks of Generation X and would prove to be the last definitive subculture group of the analog world. The ‘90s, whose 30th anniversary is quickly approaching, has come to be known as the last discernible and cohesive decade, cherished by those who experienced it and romanticized by those who missed it.

The first comprehensive visual document of ‘90s nightlife and street culture, New York Club Kids grants special access to a dormant world, curated and narrated by someone who participated in the experience. Featuring rare photographs and ephemera, the book culls from the personal archives of various photographers and artists whose recognition is long overdue.

SOME WEAR LEATHER SOME WEAR LACE

It was a scene that had many names: some original members referred to themselves as punks, others, new romantics, new wavers, the bats or the morbids. 'Goth' did not gain lexical currency until the late 1980s. But no matter what term was used, 'postpunk' encompasses all the incarnations of the 1980s alternative movement. Some Wear Leather, Some Wear Lace is a visual and oral history of the first decade of the scene. Featuring interviews with both the performers and the audience to capture the community on and off stage, the book places personal snapshots alongside professional photography to reveal a unique range of fashions, bands and scenes. A book about the music, the individual and the creativity of a worldwide community rather than theoretical definitions of a subculture, Some Wear Leather, Some Wear Lace considers a subject not often covered by academic books. Whether you were part of the scene or are just fascinated by different modes of expression, this book will transport you to another time and place.

MOBY

DESTROYED

Like no other music of its era, Moby's oceanic, bluesy electronica has summed up the millennial turn's rootless melancholia, in massive worldwide hits like "Porcelain," "Natural Blues" and "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?" His 1999 album Play sold over ten million copies and converted a whole generation to electronic dance music. With Destroyed, Moby has created a visual analogue to his gorgeous soundworld. The photographs in this volume record the sizeable portion of his life that is spent shuttling from plane to bus to venue to stage to party to hotel room to oblivion. "I hope that somehow in these pictures," Moby writes, "I'm able to convey the mundanity of touring, juxtaposed with those moments of the strange and/or sublime. One minute on tour you're by yourself in a soulless airport, the next minute you're flying over the most beautiful landscapes on the planet. One minute on tour you're by yourself in a soulless backstage area, the next minute you're on stage pouring your heart out to 75,000 people. Touring is all contrasts and strangeness, and that's what I'm trying to convey in these pictures." The 60 photographs in Moby: Destroyed accordingly veer from crowdedness to isolation, capturing the extremes of a life lived on the road. Also included is Moby's new album of the same name.

ANDY SUMMERS

I’LL BE WATCHING YOU

INSIDE THE POLICE

In the early 1980s, The Police went on tour accompanied by a photographer who documented the band behind the scenes in a series of candid and striking black and white photos. This talented photographer also happened to be the band’s guitarist, Andy Summers. Yes, it’s true―the man responsible for the guitar lick from "Every Breath You Take" was not only the backbone of one of the most popular bands of all time, he also possessed a visual gift for composition and mood that allowed him to capture the spirit of The Police better than anyone else could have.

This book, somewhere between photojournalism and an illustrated diary, follows The Police around the globe between 1980 and 1983. From the American West to Australia to Japan, Summers recorded not only the band members rehearsing and partying―the proverbial sex, drugs, and rock and roll―he also photographed fans, landscapes, still lifes, and passersby in a reportage style reminiscent of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank.

Containing over 600 photos and filled with diary-style entries, I’ll Be Watching You is a sumptuous volume beating with musical energy, nostalgia, and atmospheric beauty. A must for photo buffs and Police fans alike. Contains over 600 photographs personally selected from the photographer’s archive of over 25,000 thousand negatives (1980-83)

Most photos are previously unpublished, and many of them have never even been printed prior to this project.
